The 2nd Graduate Student’s Academic and Cultural Festival opened with one of its most exciting events “Dialogue with Masters” on the night of Nov. 19 in the Science and Technology Lecture Hall, which was fully packed with more than 400 attendants, including Chen Yi, professor of physichemistry and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mao Jiaqi, professor of history, Dong Jian, professor of literary criticism, Min Tiejun, Vice Secretary of NJU Party Committee, Cheng Chongqing, Vice President of the University and Dean of Graduate School, as well as department heads and representatives from Jiangsu Students Union and Nanjing Graduate Students Union. Letters and telegrams congratulating the opening of the festival have been received from the graduate students unions of more than 20 universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, to name but a few.
In his opening speech, Vice Party Secretary Min highlighted the importance of fostering initiative and creativity in graduate students. The Graduate Students’ Academic and Cultural Festival, he said, can “provide students with opportunities to show their talents, expand their visions, and improve their abilities.” “Dialogues with the renowned professors,” he added “will help students to follow their role models towards achieving excellence in study and research.”
During the ceremony, Vice President Cheng appointed Professors Chen, Mao and Dong as festival consultants. The festival will last five months, comprised of a series of events such as academic forums, student performances, volunteering services and sports games.
